What is Oxi-Bond?

Oxi-Bond is a latex primer concentrate to improve bonding of pavement sealers.
Why Prime?
Asphalt has a very poor resistance to weathering and it decomposes under ultraviolet sun rays. It’s a known fact that asphalt surfaces begin to oxidize and deteriorate from the moment they are laid. Over years of continuous exposure, unprotected pavements become porous and powdery. The effects of degradation are seen not only at the surface, but also inside pores and capillaries that exist naturally in any weathered asphalt. Oxidative degradation is readily detected since its most immediate visible effect is to turn the black asphalt color to a gray or grayish-white appearance.
Asphalt surfaces that are heavily oxidized and weathered must be primed effectively to quench the “binder need” of the surface before sealcoating. Otherwise, binder from the sealer will be absorbed in the layers of oxidized pavement and will not be available to form a touch film of sealcoat on the surface. And, that will cause premature failure of the sealcoating.
Priming is also essential for surfaces where the aggregates in the original asphalt mix have become polished from traffic wearing on the surface. Asphalt sealers, or any coating, will have difficulty bonding to polished (slick) surfaces. OXI-BOND Primer penetrates into the aggregates and forms a sound substrate to accept sealcoating film with due tenacity.
Coal tar sealers must have a good sound surface that they can bond to if they are to do their job. Priming saturates the old oxidized asphalt pavements as well as provides anchoring sites on polished aggregates. The subsequent sealcoating will then be allowed to bond firmly without flaking or peeling and offer many more years of satisfactory performance.
Types of Primers:
Oxidized and porous asphalt surfaces are primed with basically, three types of materials before sealcoating:
  1. Diluted coal tar emulsion
  2. Diluted asphalt emulsion
  3. OXI-BOND Latex Primer
Diluted coal tar emulsion sealers do very little except to coat the top surface and blacken up the asphalt. They do not offer long-term bonding themselves, and cannot penetrate the pores and voids in the surface. The particles of tar or asphalt are too large to get into the surface, and therefore just sit on the top of the asphalt surface. The oxidized asphalt in the pavement is left unsaturated and the process of further oxidation and the deterioration of the pavement proceeds unchecked.
OXI-BOND Latex Primer is formulated with special chemicals, dispersants, surfactants, and polymers which drive it into the pores to thoroughly saturate the oxidized portions of asphalt. It coats the exposed aggregate with a well-bonded layer of polymer, thus creating an excellent surface for good long-term bonding to asphalt sealers.
How Much Will It Cost to Use Oxi-Bond Primer?
For most jobs, about $0.01/sq. ft. for material. This is certainly a small price to pay for a solution to bonding problems and to make your jobs last longer.
How to Use Oxi-Bond Primer?
OXI-BOND Latex Primer is supplied in a concentrated formula for dilution with clean, fresh water prior to application. MIX OXI-BOND LATEX PRIMER 50/50 WITH WATER. Apply diluted material to clean, dry pavement surfaces by spray, brush, or roller at the rate of 180-360 sq.ft./gallon. Avoid over application. OXI-BOND LATEX PRIMER is designed to be used in a thin film only. Drying time: 30-60 minutes for subsequent sealcoating.
Other Uses for OXI-BOND Latex Primer:
OXI-BOND Latex Primer cut 50/50 with water can also be used for:
  1. an effective oil spot primer
  2. priming concrete surfaces prior to applying seal coat
  3. priming fresh hot mix patches to avoid the normal 30-60 day curing periods prior to applying asphalt sealers
  4. an effective block-out paint for unwanted line striping or markings
